Project Description
THE COMPASS TRUST
Every child – no matter where it comes from deserves the best education and support it can get. Unfortunately, not everyone is born in a country where mental education, health systems or even sports education can be taken for granted. In these countries, education is only accessible for kids with a wealthy background. Dealing with poverty, a high crime rate, teenage pregnancies, as well as many other obstacles education is not affordable or even possible. This builds a barrier for most of the population which isn’t easy to cross.
Therefore „The Compass Trust“ envisions a world without barriers. A place for kids where education comes first, no matter their background. With passion and hope for a better future, this NGO creates different learning opportunities. Classes, sports education, IT knowledge and mentoring help children find their path for the future. Volunteers spend their time making a difference in the lives of countless children by participating to realize the vision.
WHO ARE WE?
“There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up.”
PROJECTS
Breaking the cycle of poverty to provide a better future for children.
BUILD UP KIDS is a scholarship program that funds school tuition for talented children from Lavender High to give them a chance to attend better-resourced schools. Giving children the opportunity to a better education opens the door to explore the world behind their hometowns. Supporting children every step of the way makes great future adults, with the ability to make their dreams come true.
How BUILD UP KIDS works
Using sport as a tool to deliver life skills that enable young people to shape their own future.
Sport has an impact on the physical and mental health of everybody. Posture, strength and endurance are equally important as a school education. Being able to do different kinds of sports promotes social scills such as teamwork, fairness and tolerance. Coping with losing a game prepares kids for the future aswell as winning it. The sports development program combines different initiatives using various sports to empower kids to try out new things, learn how to interact with each other and to strenghten their self control. Therfore the program makes a meaningful difference in the live of children.
How SPORTS DEVELOPMENT works
An IT competence center with the purpose to create educational opportunities through skills training based on IT technology.
The Vrygrond Computer Lab was introduced in 2013 as a cooperation project between the University of Cape Town and the University of Pforzheim. Reasons for the invention of the Lab were the poor education in the field of computer science as well as a high number of school dropouts.
Equipped with 20 computers and lead by volunteers gives classes to children and adults with an interest in computer science. Without an age limit, everybody in the community can join and learn computer basics to better their chances of employment.

OUR JOURNEY
2015
AN IDEA WAS BORN
Poverty is cyclical. If we don’t start to change, it will never happen. So the idea to give kids the chance to a better life by providing education, mentoring and help was born.
THE JOURNEY BEGINS
“The Compass Trust” starts a partnership with Levana Primary School in Lavender Hill (Cape Town), providing tutoring and physical education assistance. Donations over EUR 30,000 were raised and used to provide sports equipment to the under-resourced Levana Primary.
2016
THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
With the launch of the Scholarship program, “The Compass Trust” helped to get talented children into good High Schools outside of Lavender Hill.
Fighting for the same vision, “The Compass Trust” merges with initiAID, a German NPO running a Computer Lab in Vrygrond to help fund and develop projects.
The first 15 Scholarships are being started. The mentoring program includes focus groups, trips and the use of IT facilities at the Computer Lab in Vrygrond.
